Over the last few years, the phenomenon of Geographical Indications (GIs) has stimulated increased interest in the USA. As producers and consumers become familiar with and appreciate the benefits derived from GIs, promoted a debate on American products, with the contribution of relevant public and private stakeholders as well as academic circles.
In this context, in March 2010 published – in collaboration with eminent American experts – a manual “American Products: Protecting a Legacy”. The manual focuses on the socio-economic implications of GIs in the US as well as on the adjustments the current legal framework would require for the American GI business to fully deploy its potential.
Following the publication of the manual, an interesting debate among stakeholders is being held. Please find below the most important elements of such debate.
