#MembersVoice: Crowdfunding for the GI “Ziama-Macenta”
The “Ziama-Macenta” coffee (Guinea) is one of the first three GIs recognized in 2013 within the African Intellectual Property Organisation (OAPI). The GI recognition was the result of a collective project that involved more than 1,000 farmers in Guinea. In 2014, the “Association pour la défense du café Ziama-Macenta” (ADECAM) joined oriGIn.
Following this, the GI reputation raised as well as its demand on the market. As a result, in March 2015, the WOKO cooperative, member of ADECAM, launched a crowdfunding campaign to facilitate the export of Ziama-Macenta coffee. This initiative aims at raising funds for the cooperative WOKO to buy from the GI producers and then export a container of GI coffee to the European market. Through an online platform, everybody can contribute with an amount between 20 € to 1.000 €. The money will be reimbursed in August 2015 with an interest rate of 2%.
To support Ziama-Macenta coffee producers, oriGIn will participate in the crowdfunding campaign with a symbolic contribution of 100 euros.

#Champagne: the appellation recognized in Ecuador and Chile
The appellation of origin “Champagne” is now recognised in Ecuador and Chile.
In 2012, the “Comité Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne” (CIVC) filed a request for protection of “Champagne” at the Ecuador Intellectual Property Institute. The GI was successfully registered in January 2015.
Moreover, on 1 February 2015 “Champagne” obtained the definitive protection in Chile, in the framework of the Association Agreement concluded between Chile and the European Union in 2002 (see Ratified Agreement ). The “phasing out” 12-year period provided by the Agreement came to an end.

#oriGIn: Action for GI protection against counterfeiting goods in transit in the EU
In view of the next meeting of the Committee of Legal Affairs (JURI) of the European Parliament, on the Draft Report “Towards a renewed consensus on the enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights: An EU action plan”, oriGIn sent a position paper on the topic to the Rapporteur, Mr. Pavel Svoboda, as well as to the other members of the JURI Committee.
oriGIn stressed the importance to provide effective protection to GIs against counterfeiting goods in transit in the EU, as part of a strategy to help GI beneficiaries to enforce their rights.
At the same time, oriGIn invited the JURI Committee to push the European Commission to act on this issue, highlighting that the existing legal means to fight such phenomenon at the EU level cannot be considered satisfactory. The Draft Report, in paragraphs 21 and 22, refers to the crucial role played by custom authorities and international cooperation in fighting IPRs infringement in cross-border trade. In this respect, oriGIn, with the support of some of its members, proposed an amendment to provide GI beneficiaries the right to prevent third parties from misusing GIs on goods in transit within the EU.
