#MozzarellaRoads: oriGIn helps the “Consorzio della Mozzarella di Bufala Campana” to organize a successful culinary show in Geneva
On 17 February, the “Consorzio della Mozzarella di Bufala Campana”, with the support of oriGIn and the Italian Trade Agency (ITA), organised for the first time in Geneva the culinary show “Le Strade della Mozzarella” (Mozzarella Roads).
During a day of workshops and show cooking, with the participation of Michelin-starred chefs, “Le Strade della Mozzarella” allowed a large audience of participants (restaurateurs, distributors, journalists, diplomats, representatives of international and non-governmental organizations) to enjoy the Italian PDO “Mozzarella di Bufala Campana” in combination with other typical products of the Italian region Campania.

#ExpoIdeas: oriGIn involved in the debate on sustainability and counterfeiting
“EXPO Milan 2015: Feeding the Planet – Energy for Life” is a non-commercial Universal Exposition. It will be open from May 1 to October 31, 2015, and it is expected to welcome over 20 million visitors. During this event, the Government of Italy intends to finalize “the Charter of Milan”, an act of commitment to be signed by citizens, institutions, businesses and associations as the contribution of EXPO Milan 2015 to the debate on the new United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
In this framework, over 500 experts (divided in 4 macro thematic areas and some 40 working groups) gathered in Milan on 7 February for the “Expo of Ideas”, with the objective to launch the discussions, which will lead to the Charter of Milan. oriGIn, through its Managing Director Massimo Vittori, its Vice-President Riccardo Deserti (Director of the “Consorzio Parmigiano-Reggiano”) and a member of the Executive Committee Fernando Cano (Representative for Europe of the “Consejo Regulador del Tequila”) brought the point of views of GIs at the Expo of Ideas working groups on “sustainability of agriculture” and “fighting agricultural products’ counterfeiting”.

#CETA: Members’ Voice – Geographical Indications in CETA, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the EU, by Mr. Bernard O’Connor, NCTM Lawyers
The EU and Canada have recently concluded a free trade agreement containing provisions on geographical indications (GIs). This short note (the full article is available in English and in Italian) looks at the text of the agreement and asks whether the approach taken by the EU negotiators achieves the objective of protecting the EU’s ‘living cultural and gastronomic heritage’.
The agreement – made public on the 26th of September 2014 goes some way to protecting, in Canada, certain geographical names considered economically important for the EU and introduces a degree of coexistence between specific trade marks and geographical indications. The very inclusion of a provision on GIs can be considered as a negotiating success by the EU given the traditional position of Canada in relation to the EU’s concept on GIs and the conflicts in relation to some names between the two entities. A second positive from the negotiations is that the EU has achieved some protection for some EU GIs in Canada where before there could be none.
The agreement, however, does not address the more fundamental problem of the coexistence of trade marks and geographical indications as two distinct forms of intellectual property or establish principles to guide the resolution of conflict in specific cases.
