Dear members,
The new year 2022 presents several challenges and opportunities for Geographical Indications. From addressing the implications of sustainability to the consolidation of the Geneva Act and its international registry as well as the revision of the EU GIs system. Moreover, stakeholders will have to continue coping with the uncertainties related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Building upon the excellent results of the past biennium, oriGIn intends to consolidate its work and services aimed at promoting robust GIs protection. In this respect, to reinforce our message and identity, you will soon receive a survey aimed at collecting data on the economic and social impact of our global network. Likewise, we want to strengthen the opportunities to exchange best practice and experiences withing the network, to facilitate the consolidation of legal frameworks, associations and control systems worldwide.
At a turning point for GIs and for our organization, we also believe time is ripe for revising the governance of oriGIn regional antennas, with the objective to improve their effectiveness. Starting from the existing one – oriGIn EU – which could then become a model for other similar initiatives in Latin America (where an interest in this sense has been mentioned already) and beyond – we intend to propose mechanisms to better respond to the regional needs, while keeping a solid link the oriGIn worldwide headquarter.
We look forward to working with you on these issues. Meanwhile, thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
