19/05/2014 – Live Webinar: “Unpacking the TTIP”, Northwestern University in Chicago

Live webinar on Monday, May 19th, from 2:00 – 4:00 CDT:  “Unpacking the TTIP.” The panel will be held at Northwestern University in Chicago.

There are three ways to participate:

This is the second in a series of ten panels on the theme of American Origin Products and the TTIP: Collaboration for Rural Development. You can find more information about the panels series here, including the full schedule: http://www.aopcentral.us/aop-panel-series.html

Themes to be addressed: Regionally identified foods (Idaho potato, Napa Valley wine, Kona Coffee) are among the best known, highest value products of the US. They enjoy a strong reputation for quality and have a large impact on rural economies. They offer variety of choice to consumers while preserving local traditions and cultural heritage. In many cases they enjoy thriving export trade with room to grow.

This second panel/webinar in the series will provide an overview of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) with a focus on geographical indications (the international legal term for origin products). Speakers will address how AOP producers may be affected by the TTIP negotiations, and what is at stake.

An insider’s view from the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva will help participants better understand the history of debate surrounding geographical indications (origin products), how the WTO functions regarding differences among countries, and where this debate may be headed in the future in the TTIP.

Finally, we will take a look at what trade harmonization for AOP producers might look like by learning more about the process of bringing organic standards between the U.S. and the EU into alignment, facilitating trade in these products.
A question and answer period will round out the event, and online questions are welcome during the event or afterwards online.

Please join us to continue this exploration of the challenges and opportunities facing American Origin Product producers.
