Over the years, oriGIn has increasingly been involved in cooperation projects aimed at promoting GI recognition in emerging economies and developing countries. One example is the recent cooperation with AfriPI on African GIs.
A success factors for GIs, we have been consistently advocating for:
i. A quality or reputation linked to the product’s geographical environment;
ii. A robust system of protection and enforcement is also required;
iii. The establishment of a common platform (a GI group) with its governance, to regulate the relations among producers and other relevant actors in the value chain;
iv. A credible system of controls, which must ensure the promise made to consumers is respected and the product’s authenticity guaranteed.
As the requests for oriGIn involvement in cooperation projects including the above-mentioned components is growing, we will establish an informal Working Group of members interested in providing advice and – if need be – be directly involved in such projects. If you wish to be part of this Working Group, please write an email to ida@origin-gi.com by 14 April.
