The new GI Act of Malaysia entered into force on 18 March 2022.
The law does not provide robust protection for all GIs. It provides the registration of names for 10 years (renewable) as well as the possibility of GI cancellation based on subsequent genericness (the later is not in line with the current international law standard on GIs).
On 20 June, Kazakhstan adopted a set of amendments to its IP law, introducing significant changes, including the introduction of geographical indication (GI). Currently, it is already possible to protect a geographical name in Kazakhstan as an appellation of origin (AO). The amendment will introduce the GI scheme, together with the existing AO one. The protection of foreign GIs in Kazakhstan will also be possible. The amendments are expected to enter into force on 21 August 2022. oriGIn will follow the dossier and analyze the full English text of the amendments, as soon as it is available.
