With the recognition of Pluma (coffee), the number of national GIs protected in Mexico has grown to 70. On the international side, according to article 18 of the 1997 Agreement on the mutual recognition and protection of designations for spirit drinks between the EU and the United Mexican States, Annexes I and II containing the lists of protected spirit drinks have been updated.
As a result, all 6 Mexican GIs spirits (Bacanora, Charanda, Raicilla and Sotol, together with Tequila and Mezcal which were protected in the EU since 1997) are now protected within the EU. Likewise, Tequila has recently obtained a certification mark in Georgia, which will complement the protection as an appellation of origin in that jurisdiction previously obtained via the WIPO Lisbon Agreement. This information can be checked on oriGIn Worldwide GIs Compilation.
