28/05/2019 – Interesting collaboration between EURid and EUIPO to reduce the risks of cybersquatting in the “.eu” domain

thumb EURIDThe European Registry for Internet Domains (EURid) is the not-for-profit organization that manages the “.eu” and “.ею” (Cyrillic script) domains. EURid works with over 750 accredited registrars.

Thanks to the collaboration between EURid and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), holders of European Union trade marks (EUTM) can:

  1. Easily check if an equivalent “.eu” second level domain is available and eventually register it with the accredited registrars;
  2. As of 18 May, they can also “opt-in” to receive alerts as soon as a “.eu” second level domain name identical to their EUTM (or to their application) is registered. Through this, EUTM holders can promptly take action against a “.eu” second level domain name registered in bad faith, thereby reducing the risks of cyber-squatting.

oriGIn is in touch with the EUIPO and the European Commission to verify the possibility to extend a similar service to “.eu” second level domains registrations identical to PDO, PGI and GIs recognized in the EU.
