Next November, the Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia (FNC), the group in charge of the GI “café de Colombia”, will receive the Inter-American Dialogue Distinguished Leadership Award for Social Equity. The FNC has been selected because, over the years, it distinguished itself for its outstanding work in promoting the economic and social welfare of Colombian coffee growers. For more than 90 years, the FNC has worked with the Colombian government and with partners from all over the world to bring social progress to the more than 600 municipalities in the country (54% of total). Direct investments in education, health and infrastructure have increased the well-being of the more than 540,000 coffee-growing families. Since 1938, the Federation, through its research institute Cenicafé, has sought to guarantee the sustainability of small coffee farms that make up the majority of coffee growers in Colombia.
The Inter-American Dialogue is a US center for policy analysis, exchange, and communication, dedicated to advancing a regional agenda of democratic governance, prosperity, and social equity.
