Our global network is an ideal platform for the exchange of best practices among groups and experts on practical topics of interest for GIs, from legal and enforcement issues, to controls, associations and sustainability.
In this framework, we are implementing two interesting projects.
- On the one hand – with the support of the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IPI), the Instituto Nacional de Defensa de la Competencia y de la Protección de la Propiedad Intelectual (INDECOPI) and oriGIn Peru – we are helping the producers of the Peruvian GI “Café Villa Rica” to elaborate a sustainability strategy. Based on the FAO-oriGIn methodology, the strategy will be finalized through an inclusive process involving the producers and other relevant stakeholders in the Villa Rica geographical area. In this context, a first webinar was organized on 28 November, with the participation of the “Federación Nacional Cafeteros de Colombia” (FNC), a member of oriGIn in the coffee sector which has developed a solid experience on sustainability: https://www.origin-gi.com/28-11-2024-webinar-implementing-a-sustainability-strategy-for-cafe-villarica/
- Parallel to that – with the support of CIRAD – oriGIn is helping the “Ceylon tea” GI stakeholders in Sri Lanka (tea producers and exporters as well as local authorities) elaborate a strategy to carry controls in the markets where the product is exported as well as online. This activity has the objective to allow “Ceylon tea” GI stakeholders to better fight infringements and counterfeiting. In this framework, a first webinar to introduce the GI legal frameworks and market controls in key exports markets for Ceylon tea was organized on 29 November, with the participation of several experts of our global network: https://www.origin-gi.com/november-december-2024-origin-cirad-series-of-webinars-on-controls-with-a-view-on-building-a-gi-on-ceylon-tea/
These projects represent the essence of our cooperation model: Leveraging expertise within our global network to provide support and best practices to GIs around the world.
