On 31 August, Switzerland joined the WIPO Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement. The Act will enter into force on 1 December 2021 with respect to the country. Both Swiss Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications – such as Swiss Watches, Gruyère, Viande Séchée du Valais, Longeole, can now be protected under the treaty.
With Switzerland, the Geneva Act covers 34 jurisdictions around the world and is poised to keep attracting new Member States. Switzerland’s accession will enable national groups to obtain a high level of protection for their GIs in all contracting parties, through a single application filed with WIPO and the payment of one set of fees.
